A WOMAN from St Michael’s was arrested last Friday after attempting to castrate her two puppies using elastic bands.
She was charged with animal cruelty and released on bail of R2 000.
The case was reported to the Lower South Coast SPCA, and Inspector Julia Watson and trainee Natasha Esterhuizen responded.
This old-fashioned method of castration, known to be performed on sheep, is disturbing, dangerous and illegal.
“This is not a method to use as it can cause much suffering, infection, and can be life-threatening,” said SPCA manager, Michael Muller.
The wounds around the puppies’ testicles have gone septic and they are being treated by the SPCA.
