SMG’s Mandela Day initiative ‘gets wheels’

This car dealership is determined to go that extra mile in remembering Mandela.

SMG BMW South Coast’s drive for charity 2014, to help 67 families on Mandela Day, kicked off with a gathering of SMG’s management, staff and several stakeholders at the dealership’s premises last Tuesday.

Dealer principal, Darren Staats said that he approached many of his long standing clients to put something together for Mandela Day.

“At first, we decided to donate 67 blankets to the less fortunate, but our idea grew, and five organisations, namely, Hibiscus Coast Municipality, Ugu District Municipality, Sanco Development Institute, Esayidi FET College and the Road Accident Fund have come on board,” said Mr Staats.

“We aim to improve the lives of these 67 families in the Masinenge and Gamalakhe areas with the help of the municipalities’ Sukuma Sakhe project, by giving them food parcels and blankets, renovating houses, planting trees and introducing a soup kitchen, not only on Mandela Day, but on an ongoing basis.”

Hibiscus Coast spokesman Simon Soboyisa and acting senior manager-mayoralty and communications of Ugu District Municipality, Arthur Mbhele, echoed Mr Staats’s sentiments and were pleased to be partnering with SMG on this worthy initiative.
