AfriForum stands firm on Wimpy ‘collusion’
The civil rights body is now planning to lodge a complaint with the public protector.
FAMOUS Brands is demanding an apology from AfriForum for suggesting that they colluded with Umdoni municipal officials in not awarding a long-term lease for the beachfront Wimpy to Faurco Investments.
AfriForum made the claim in a memorandum that was handed over to Mayor Siyabonga Khwela during a protest gathering on the beachfront two weeks ago.
Famous Brands hit back with a letter from their legal consultant, denying AfriForum’s claims and demanding that AfriForum’s Chris Fourie retract the statement immediately and apologise publicly. However, AfriForum is standing firm on its statement.
Mr Fourie said they had been reliably informed that the mayor had instructed Eddie von Gericke, Managing Executive: KZN, not to award the franchise agreement. AfriForum also claimed that Mr von Gericke had confirmed in a meeting that there was already a new owner for the Wimpy.
Meanwhile, Umdoni Municipality insists that the Wimpy and Pavilion will still go out to tender. The process had not yet begun ,much less been concluded. AfriForum is now planning to lodge a complaint with the public protector.
“AfriForum will watch over the tender process to ensure that there are no further irregularities,” said Mr Fourie.
He also confirmed Faurco Investment’s decision to be out of the premises by the end of August.
