Water relief plans for KwaNzimakwe
The completion of the project will ensure that the community no longer experiences water shortages.
THE KwaNzimakwe community is delighted that the long awaited reservoir will be completed within the next six months.
Ugu District Municipality held a sod turning ceremony at Braemar Hall last Thursday, to mark the continuation of the project.
While work on this project started in 2006, problems were experienced with the contractor and so Ugu had to get a new one.
“We are aware that the community has been experiencing water problems, and we know that sometimes our water tankers do not do the rounds,” said Ugu mayor Ntombifikile Gumede.
The contract of R2 927 371,23 was awarded to LNY construction and Civil and Umzansi Africa Civils. The pipe, which will be 6.5km in length and 250m wide, will be linked to Umtamvuna water works and will feed the reservoir.
“We always stress to contractors to use local labour,” said mayor Gumede. She added that 20 local people will get jobs and that the municipality has made sure that there is a steering committee which will ensure that local people are employed.
