This hole is a dangerous eyesore, says resident
A deep hole housing water pipes has been left exposed for several days.
IT appears that plumbers working for the Ugu District Municipality fix burst water pipes but fail to reinstate the area.
They leave behind large, deep trenches and exposed pipes. Business owners on East Street in Shelly Beach said that a gaping hole, almost a metre deep, was dug by Ugu last Saturday and has been left open and untouched ever since.
One resident who uses East Street to get to her house said that it’s a deep hole with sand around it making it an ideal place for children to explore. “Not only is this hole an eyesore, but pedestrians could fall into it and injure themselves,” she said.
Another furious business owner, who cannot enter his shop as the hole is situated right in front of his entrance, said that sometimes these holes that have been dug are smaller but are also left uncovered.
“Often these holes pose serious danger as they are in the middle of the road or pavements like this one. What I don’t understand is when Ugu plumbers repair burst pipes there is no automatic arrangement made for a contractor to follow up to close the holes or re-tar the roads,” he said.
To date the hole remains uncovered, posing a danger to motorists and pedestrians.
