Emergency pipeline replacement completed

The project cost more than R43-million.

THOSE living in Marburg, Southbroom, Ramsgate, Umtentweni and Oshabeni will be glad to know that the Ugu municipality emergency pipeline replacement project has been completed.

Last Friday Ugu mayor, Ntombifikile Gumede accompanied by officials from Umgeni Water and local councillors handed over the first completed section of the multi-million rand project.

The R43-million plus project was undertaken in partnership with Umgeni Water to permanently solve water woes within the district. Southbroom, Ramsgate and Marburg communities were the first to benefit from this district-wide project of replacing aged infrastructure for improved water supply.

“Water infrastructure across the district has reached the end of its lifespan,” said Ms Gumede.

She added that this was the major cause of excessive water supply interruptions  and due to the frequency of these interruptions, the municipality had appointed Umgeni Water to fast-track implementation for the replacement of aged pipelines.

Addressing the different community structures at the handover ceremony, the mayor said the municipality was proud to have reached a stage of having a good story to tell.

“The district has become notorious for frequent water interruptions and today we are excited to have completed this phase of the project, which will now allow these communities improved water supply,” she said.
