BASED on her qualifications and obvious passion for the job, Umdoni’s new communications officer, Zekhethelo Ndlovu might just be a welcome breath of fresh air.
The Mail met with her this week and is confident that Umdoni is now serious about keeping the press and ratepayers properly informed.
Zekhethelo says the fundamentals of being a good communications practitioner is to be innovative.
“Communications can either make or break an organisation,” she said while introducing herself to the Mail’s Tiffany Avern-Taplin.
Zekhethelo, known as Zek (26), certainly has all the right qualifications for the job.
She has a Bachelor of Social Science Degree in Management and Communications and Bachelor of Commerce (honours). Because of her innate drive and tenacity for education, Zek decided to top it up with a Master of Commerce Degree in Leadership Studies that she is due to complete soon. She is specialising in Regional and Local Economic Development at the UKZN Graduate School of Business.
She says she is inspired by the words of Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon that we can use to change the world”. “I love my job because I initiate ideas and think critically.”
She has worked at various institutions such Simba Pepsico, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the KZN Department of Transport. Her motto in life is “deeds not words”. “One has got to have a sense of urgency when working with the media as meeting deadlines is vital,” she said.
“My passion and enthusiasm for communications will enhance Umdoni’s relationship with all its stakeholders.”
