Shoot-out at Spar

LIKE a scene from the Wild West, shots were fired at Moodley’s Spar in Umkomaas in the early hours of last Saturday.
Following an alarm activation at 2.44am a Magma Security response vehicle arrived and an officer went to inspect the doors. Suddenly he heard a voice telling him to freeze.
Two armed men then opened fire, shooting 25 rounds at the security officer. The officer returned fire while managing to get to his vehicle, flee the scene and wait for back up. Four rounds from what are believed to be AK47 assault rifles hit his response vehicle.
The men broke into the shop through the roof, cutting the alarm, telephone and electricity wires, but did not count on there being a secondary alarm which they triggered.
A manager at the spar said the damage was extensive. However, the robbers only seemed to get away with a few cigarettes.
