Prostitutes on the prowl in Port Shepstone
A long-term solution to the problem needs to be found as soon as possible.
SEX workers operating in Princess Elizabeth Drive, Port Shepstone have raised the ire of residents and business owners.
From the early hours of the morning, till late at night, young women loiter along the road from the Port Shepstone lighthouse to Sharks Den and the Port Shepstone Museum, waiting for clients.
Many residents have said from just a handful of women it’s now multiplied. “Although we feel sorry for these women, we need the authorities to find a long-term solution to the problem,” said one homeowner.
“Our children can’t play outside because these women are all over the road. They are now fighting for clients. Just last week we had two women fighting over a customer who was parked right outside our gate waiting for one of them,” said the homeowner.
Another resident said, “We are paying our rates and we demand to have this area cleared of prostitution. There are many holiday homes and a hotel situated in the area. We market ourselves as a family destination, thus we need family values to be the order of the day.”
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said police are arresting people who are loitering for the purposes of prostitution. “They have paid fines when charged. We will continue making arrests, especially over the festive period when many visitors will come to the beachfront,” she said.
In previous reports the Hibiscus Coast Municipality confirmed that council would work closely with law enforcement agencies to apprehend culprits.
