Potential growth for Margate Airport

The aim of the partnersship is to promote South Coast tourism.

A NEW partnership has been formed between the Hibiscus Coast and Port St Johns Municipalities to promote Margate Airport.

The two municipalities signed a memorandum of understanding at an information gala dinner which was held at the Lilly Lodge in Port St Johns on Tuesday.

“The OR Tambo to Margate Airport route, operated by CemAir Airlines on behalf of the municipality, has grown from strength to strength. What started out as two flights a week, a little over a year ago has grown to a fully fledged daily service, seven days a week,” said HCM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu.

“The municipality attributes this growth to a remarkable partnership between its community and the private sector,” she added.

The municipality has resolved to embark on a marketing drive to promote the route. The campaign kicked off at Port St Johns Municipality, where invited stakeholders met with both the municipalities and CemAir Airlines.

“The objective of this interaction was to expose as many people to the route as possible, and to highlight that King Shaka International Airport is just 160 km away from Margate,” said the mayor.

The memorandum of understanding also involves an agreement of cooperation in areas of tourism, policy formulation, governance, traffic and waste management.
