Ugu is recognised as being among the best

The municipality was one of those with a realistic and credible spatial development framework.

UGU District Municipality’s efforts have been noticed.

The municipality was awarded a certificate of recognition by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs at the World Town Planning Day at eBandla Hotel in Ballito recently.

The certificate was for producing one of the best Spatial Development Frameworks (SDF) in the province for the 2014/15 financial year.

All 61 municipalities in the province submitted Integrated Development Plans together with the SDFs for assessment by MEC Nomusa Dube-Mncube.

“The outcome of the assessment confirmed Ugu was among those municipalities which have a realistic and credible SDF in line with its IDP,” said Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo.

He also explained that the assessment is conducted with the rationale to assist municipalities strengthen the legal compliance of the SDFs across the province. It is also conducted to improve the integration of budgeting and strategic planning processes through the SDF and identify municipalities that require direct support with the development of their SDFs where appropriated for better performance.

“All compliance boxes ticked for our municipality and we are pleased that our document was considered a good enough working tool for the duration of the IDP period,” he said.

“This document will be reviewed in the next financial year and will be developed from scratch when a new five-year IDP is developed,” he concluded.
