HCM cleans up Margate town

The municipality also officially opened the beach ablution facilities.

TO promote environmental education, the Hibiscus Coast Municipality held its campaign called ‘operation sihlanza amadolobha’ which means ‘let’s clean up our town’, in Margate on Monday.

“This clean-up campaign is aimed at involving the public in environmental and waste management issues,” said HCM deputy mayor, Johnny de Wet.

He added that this initiative is a collective effort by municipal sections such as waste management, aquatic safety, fire and disaster and law enforcement.

“Another objective of this project is to ensure that our towns are clean and that the public adheres to the municipal by-laws. In this regard the project will cover towns from Hibberdene to Port Edward on a quarterly basis,” he added.

“Waste minimisation is not just a municipal responsibility. It is our responsibility as a community because we are the ones who litter and who create the waste. I urge everyone to be responsible for their actions and stop littering,” said the deputy mayor.

HCM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu also officially opened the Margate beach ablution facilities, to ensure that the Margate beach is in a tidy state for the holiday season.
