Ugu plans for peak season

The municipality has five mobile generators as back-up, in case of load shedding.

TO ensure minimal service delivery interruptions during the festive season, Ugu District Municipality water services team has put together plans to deal with water and sanitation service challenges during the holiday season.

At a media briefing held at the Ugu boardroom on Monday, Ugu municipality manager DD Naidoo said the district was not yet out of the woods from the drought that started in June this year. “The 2014 year to date rainfall remains well below the annual average,” said Mr Naidoo.

But he gave the assurance that the municipality has comprehensive plans to manage the situation should it extend. He urged consumers to conserve water as restrictions are inevitable should there be no rainfall.

To prepare for the peak season Ugu has improved supply in the various areas of service delivery which includes the recently completed pipeline replacement project and upgrades of various water treatment works.

The municipality has also made plans in cases of load shedding to ensure that there are no water interruptions. There will be five mobile generators on standby in cases of load shedding.

“Ugu is ready for the peak season,” assured Mr Naidoo.

“However, pipe failures are inevitable in all systems as all the pipes will be using unusual energies. But there are internal resources ready to respond on such failures,” he added.

“Load shedding plans are all in place. However, Eskom may impose unscheduled load shedding which may have effect, but electrical teams and engineers are on standby to quickly offset this,” he assured.

For water and sanitation related updates and queries, consumers can communicate with their ward councillors or call 08000 92837 or 039 688 5830. Consumers can also send an sms to 44751.
