Musical brothers spread their wings

Their record label is set to expand into a national enterprise.

AN intimate performance at a private Ramsgate home by South Coast musicians Wren and Aden Hind, collectively known as The Hinds Brothers, was described by the audience as a phenomenal success.

“It was an evening filled with the most splendid mix of harmonies, intelligent lyrics and a crazy cross-section of music lovers of all ages and sizes hanging on to every note. All this, mixed with a supper of the most divine home-made breyani, made for a really jolly treat,” said local actor and singer – and Hinds Brothers fan – Barbie Meyer.

This was the Hinds Brothers’ final KwaZulu-Natal performance until later this year when Aden and Wren return to the province to sing at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg.

The brothers’ Durban-based independent record label, ‘South Sea Records’, will expand its business interests when Wren heads to Cape Town this month to set up a branch and distribution in the mother city.

Founded by the Hinds Brothers in late 2013, primarily as a means to release their highly acclaimed debut album ‘Ocean of Milk’ independently, the record label soon began to embody the wider musical vision of the brothers. ‘Volume 1’- the debut EP by Wren and his wife, Faye, was released early last year exclusively on South Sea Records and in September the record label brought internationally acclaimed folk hero Willy Mason to Durban for two concerts with The Hinds Brothers.

In November the label set up a distribution network that focused around trendy Durban coffee and tea shops. Artists currently distributed by South Sea include Guy Buttery, Madala Kunene, David Jenkins, Faye and Wren and of course The Hinds Brothers.

As well as setting up a similar distribution network in Cape Town the brothers will do the same in Johannesburg later this year.
