40 years of fun at Grannies’ Walk at St Michaels Beach

Perfect weather welcomed the walkers, with families particularly well represented.

Dancing grannies, dressed-up doggies, happy families, lucky draws and almost 200 walkers made the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast’s 40th Grannies’ Walk at St Michaels Beach a memorable Heritage Day celebration.

What began 40 years ago as a celebration of women and friendship has become a much-loved South Coast tradition.

Interactors from Creston College and Margate Middle School volunteer their services.

The fun continued after the walk, with music from Harbourview Superspar and James Pickering getting walkers onto their feet.

Line-dancing instructor Noel Roos kept the momentum going.

There were plenty of lucky draw prizes and awards for the best dressed, with some of the four-legged participants also getting into the spirit of the day.

Rotary expressed its sincere thanks to all who donated prizes.

All set to go are (from left) Geraldine Thompson, Dawn Dorning, Venessa Johnson, Bradley King, Debbie Bland, Debbie Drahota, Sandy Boswell and Stan Boswell.

Special mention goes to Alison Loumeau, who collected the majority of the prizes from businesses across the community.

Health and wellbeing were also a highlight, with Pharmacy at Uvongo Spar providing medical and lifestyle checks.

For Anne Thompson, the check proved particularly important. Feeling unwell, she decided to have a quick check before joining the activities.

“Sister Minie Vorster tested me, and my sugar and blood pressure were sky high. She told me not to participate in the activities, but to sit back and enjoy the festivities and relook at my lifestyle.”

Walkers enjoy the perfect weather.

Anne heeded the advice – and then went on to win one of the 15 glucometers donated by Pharmacy at Uvongo Spar in the lucky draw.

Hibiscus Retirement Villages, one of the main sponsors, added to the festivities by treating everyone to sweet treats.

Members of Eaglecrest Interact Club, together with an Interactor from Margate Middle School, helped serve the food, while Rotary members worked throughout the event to ensure everyone felt welcome.

Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast president Audrey Ryan said: “Our sincere thanks go to our wonderful community for making this year’s Grannies Walk such a resounding success. I was so happy to see how many people responded to our request to donate a toiletry item for the collection to hospice and to our BRA Drive, which is an ongoing project.”
