Potholes scare customers away

The matter has been reported to the municipality repeatedly over the past five years and nothing has been done.

BUSINESS owners at the ‘Kwagga’ shopping centre in Marine Drive, Oslo Beach, believe that the Hibiscus Coast Municipality is ignoring major potholes at the centre’s exit/entrance.

Ernest van Loggerenberg told the Herald that they have reported the matter to the municipality repeatedly over the past five years and nothing has been done. Instead, they are being ignored by the authorities.

“These potholes are dangerous to vehicles,” he says. “Not only will they damage motor cars, but accidents are likely to happen here because drivers are now using just one lane to enter or leave the centre.”

Business manager, Tammy Fehere, said they had also approached the ward 18 councillor, Carole Potter, several times.

“She promised us that she will take this issue to the HCM but we are still in the dark. We have received no response whatsoever from either her or the municipality. You are our last resort. We know you can help,” said Ms Fehere.

Ms Potter confirmed that the matter was brought to her attention a long time ago and the Department of Transport had not responded. “I have spoken to one official at HCM, who then forwarded the report to the department, explaining that, according to the law, it was the department’s responsibility to repair any damage within three metres of the edge of the road,” she said. She added that she had received an email from DOT confirming that the road would be fixed.

Neither the Department of Transport nor HCM could be contacted for comment.
