Dripping ever closer to a crisis

Ugu District is still in the grip of a devastating drought.

UGU is reluctant to impose stricter measures yet, but the district municipality has said it will do so if residents do not heed a call to cut current water consumption by half.

This is the worst drought in KwaZulu-Natal in 30 years and the driest period in history for the whole country.

Ironically, this is also National Water Week and the official message is most apt: ‘Water has no substitute.’Ugu District Municipality has urged everyone to heed the national call to save water.

“We also live in a water-scarce district and we appeal to households and businesses to use water wisely and sparingly,” said Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo.

To recap last week’s Herald story, KwaZulu-Natal has been declared a disaster area by the National Department of Water and Sanitation.

Don’t use hosepipes, irrigation or sprinkler systems and automatic flushing urinals.

Report water leaks through your ward councillors or telephone 08000 WATER (92837) or (039) 688 5830/36 or SMS 44751.
