Harding is hard hit by drought

KwaZulu-Natal has been declared a disaster area by the national Department of Water and Sanitation, due to the province experiencing the worst drought in 30 years.

UGU District Municipality has rolled out an intensive Drought Awareness Campaign (DAC) necessitated by the alarming drop in level in the water source supplying Ugu communities.

Last Friday, the municipality took to streets and residential areas of Muziwabantu in Harding where critical information on the effects of the national drought was shared with the community.

The Harding community is currently living in the drought and the situation over the weekend slumped from bad to worse.

“The municipality’s objective with the DAC is to educate communities on the importance of water conservation and explain how we, as a district, can work together to ensure this national predicament does not spread to the rest of the district,” said outgoing spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo.

“It is important to highlight that we will try by all possible means to make sure that this water shedding does not compromise the services of St Andrew’s Hospital,” he added.

Ugu is among the hardest hit districts within KZN, with absence of heavy rainfall to fill up the sources of supply. The municipality calls on the community to conserve water and cut down by at least 50 percent of their normal usage, for the sake of a sustainable supply.
