MARBURG Primary’s silver jubilee was held last Friday (27th) in the school hall. The school, which opened its doors in January 1990, celebrates 25 years of existence and a special programme was planned for the day.
A formal function was first held in the hall with praise singer Saziso Mbunquka (gr 7D) opening proceedings in dramatic style. The first two pupils to attend Marburg Primary, namely Vishal Anirudhra and Trish Maharaj, as well as one of the first teachers Tony Sook each delivered a message of tribute to pupils.
Pupils performed various songs, dances and poems for the programme, highlighting the richness of cultural diversity present at the school. A brief history of the school was presented and the event ended with the ‘cutting of the cake’ ceremony. Members of the original staff complement who are still present at the school were called up to do the honours while pupils sang ‘happy birthday’.
After the formal function, pupils assembled on the ground for the fun walk and when the gr 1 teachers and pupils cut the ribbon at the start of the walk, celebratory balloons in red, white and blue, (Marburg Primary colours) were released. After the walk, pupils were treated to a delicious meal sponsored by Hibiscus Food for Life
A series of events has been planned throughout the year to celebrate the silver jubilee, including a golf day, soccer tournament, a Heritage Day concert, as well as a special banquet at the end of the year. The school invites all past pupils and teachers to contact the school should they be interested in getting involved with the celebrations.
