Teen’s murder inspires action
Ncedisa’s funeral will be held at her home in Bizana, Eastern Cape this Saturday, April 18.
ANC heavyweight Selvan Chetty has joined the call for everyone to work together to fight crime, which has spiked recently, particularly in areas like Umbango, Marburg and Merlewood.
This after the tragic death of a Ncedisa Jiba (17) who was robbed and murdered on Friesland Drive, Marburg, last Tuesday.
Mr Chetty told the Herald this week that the ANC had noted the recent increase in crime in these areas.
“We are calling on everyone to work together to tackle this problem head on. The ANC is shocked and deeply saddened by the recent death of this young girl. We call on the officials of the courts to seek the maximum penalty for this heinous crime.”
Last Thursday, the man accused of murdering Ncedisa, made his first appearance at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s court.
Her family, including her grandmother, grandfather, uncles, aunts and cousins, watched as the man accused of her murder walked into B court.
Aphiwe Bhala (22) appeared briefly and the case was postponed to tomorrow (Thursday) for bail application.
About midday last Tuesday, the pupil from Marburg Secondary was walking along Friesland Drive when she was attacked and robbed.
The teenager resisted and was stabbed several times before her assailant fled with her handbag, containing her cellphone and wallet. Bhala was soon arrested near Bhobhoyi and charged with murder.
Yesterday (Tuesday), Hibiscus Coast Law Enforcement officers and security company Lazer 911 held a meeting to look at innovative ways in which they can assist in fighting crime in the area.
Meanwhile, law enforcement has committed to additional patrols for the crime hot spots and Lazer 911 has dedicated a team of tactical armed response officers with a dog unit to guard areas with a high pedestrian traffic.
Residents of Marburg, Umbango and Merlewood are urged to report suspicious behaviour to the Law Enforcement control room at 039 6825555; Lazer 911 at 039 6820229 or 086 1910911 or the police at 10111.
