CRESTON College celebrated the opening of its new AstroTurf at the college last Thursday.
Guest speaker was Donna Small, who has recently been selected for the South African U21 hockey squad. She addressed pupils and parents on the importance of having AstroTurf and encouraged pupils to make the best use of the facility. The dream of having the AstroTurf at the college started three years ago.
Principal Phil Hawke thanked governing body chairmen John Fisher and Dr Kanaya Maharaj who put the plan into action last year so present and future pupils can enjoy playing on a top class surface.
He also thanked the sport coaches and everyone who played an important role in the development of the turf. He added that four cameras will be installed soon which will allow for live streaming. “The college will also allow Ugu representatives’ teams to practise at the turf before their regional tournaments. This should help in the development of hockey on the South Coast,” said Mr Hawke.
The college thanked all who made the AstroTurf possible. Soon after the formalities were over, guests and parents were treated to two exhibition games by Creston’s boys’ and girls’ first hockey teams.
