Local company scoops top award

Ngcolosi Consulting Engineers and HCM will represent KZN in the National Govan Mbeki Awards Ceremony.

NGCOLOSI Consulting Engineers walked off with the Best Implementing Award at the Govan Mbeki Awards 2015 held at the Greyville Conference Centre recently.

They earned the prestigious accolade for the Umzumbe Cluster A housing project.

“Our business is to provide professional engineering services in assisting the local and provincial government in their service delivery mandates,” said an excited Thulani Bhengu, Ngcolosi Consulting Engineers’ managing director.

The project started in 2003 when the company was appointed by Umzumbe Municipality.

The Hibiscus Coast Municipality received an award for the Best Accredited Municipality Level 1. HCM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu and municipal manager Max Mbili display the municipality's award.

“The planning stage was the most challenging and required not only professional and engineering expertise, but also sensitivity when it came to the social and political situation of the area,” he said.

A total of 1 000 homes were built and Mr Bhengu credited their quality as the main reason for the award.

The Hibiscus Coast Municipality was also awarded the Best Accredited Municipality Level 1, an accolade it also received last year.

The Department of Human Settlement holds these awards every year to recognise excellence and best practices in the provision of decent human settlements by municipalities and contractors across KwaZulu-Natal.

The awards were named after the late struggle stalwart Govan Mbeki, based on the role he played in human settlements, partnering with key partners in order to further the cause of building a nation free of inequality.

The awards also aim to promote best practices while simultaneously motivating and honouring stakeholders and role players in the human settlement value chain. These include developers, building contractors, the banking sector, community-based organisations, building material suppliers and professional associations of consulting engineers and quantity surveyors.

Ngcolosi Consulting Engineers and HCM will represent KwaZulu-Natal in their respective categories in the National Govan Mbeki Awards Ceremony in Cape Town in August 13.
