Oil spills into Mbango river
An investigation is currently underway to find the source of the oil.
LAST weekend, Ugu District Municipality discovered a huge influx of oil which had made its way to its Umbango Sewerage Works resulting in the treatment process from the plant being compromised.
The sludge settlement of this oil caused the blockages in some components of the plant and as a result there was a spillage which made its way through to the Mbango River last Saturday.
“An investigation by our technical team is currently underway to detect the source of the oil,” said municipal spokesman, France Zama.
Mr Zama added that a cleanup operation is currently under way at the plant as there is still oil coming through. He added that the amount coming through had decreased and the plant is set for full operation.
People are urged to avoid contact with the Mbango River while a team of technicians, together with environmental services, are on site to measure the extent of contamination which might be incurred due to this spillage.
