Masinenge houses to be handed over

A hundred families will have a proper roof over their heads.

AFTER years of waiting, 100 Masinenge Informal settlement families will soon be the proud owners of brand new homes.

The Hibiscus Coast Municipality will hand hand over the first units to approved beneficiaries in September.

“This forms part of phase one of the KwaMasinenge Slums Clearance Project which consists of 354 units,” said an excited HCM mayor, Cynthia Mqwebu at a press briefing on Tuesday.

“Eventually, there will be more than 800 units which will benefit more than 4 000 people.”

The entire project was handed over to the contractor in August 2013 and is expected to be completed by September 2016. The necessary administrative processes will stretch until 2017, however.

“Most notable was that more than 100 job opportunities were created for the local community every month and local contractors were also employed.” Negotiations were also at an advanced stage to bring in more local subcontractors.

“The municipality is excited that – as part of its commitment to the millennium development goals – the people of Masinenge will at last be afforded dignity with decent housing as the Freedom Charter says. We appreciate the patience of the community, whose support has not wavered, even when the project experienced its fair share of challenges,” said Cllr Mqwebu.
