PORT Shepstone Islamic School’s gr 9 pupils spent last Wednesday afternoon at the Genesis Care Centre as part of the life orientation curriculum. They provided lunch and were inspired by the optimism of patients, despite their chronic conditions.
Pupils continued their extracurricular activities last Thursday with a visit to the Oribi Gorge and Idwala Lime Works to learn about the process of lime-mining, from blasting and extraction to the final product. Different rock types and the process rocks undergo for commercial use was also discussed and pupils were intrigued to learn that spitting cobras inhabit the lime quarry.
The school encourages education beyond the confines of the classroom. Moulana Mehmood Yacoob and Moulana Hamid Mulla, from the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA), enlightened pupils on the procedure undertaken to ensure that all products are halaal-compliant. They fielded questions from curious pupils, who took advantage of the question and answer session at the end of the presentation.
