In a separate incident, a holidaymaker from Pietermaritzburg was seriously injured in an accident on the R102 in Scottburgh late last Saturday night.

Netcare 911 paramedics and their rescue unit arrived at the scene and found that the vehicle had veered off the road and slammed into a tree.

The woman was still trapped in the twisted frame of the vehicle.

While the rescue officer used the Jaws of Life to free her, medics had to clamber into the wreckage to stabilise her.

Once medics had immobilised her on a trauma board, they removed her from the wreckage and transported her to a local hospital for the care that she required.

The cause of the accident is unknown and police are investigating.

Meanwhile, three people were injured when a vehicle overturned on the N2 south under the Umgababa bridge last Saturday morning.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the RTI arrived at the scene and found that the wreckage of the vehicle had come to rest in the breakdown lane, the injured had clambered from the wreckage and were found at the side of the road.

Paramedics treated the injured at the scene before transporting them to hospital in Scottburgh.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
