DNA identifies Marburg missing man as Pradeep Mahabeer
The murdered Marburg man would have celebrated his 58th birthday tomorrow.
DNA testing has confirmed that the body found near Umkomaas four weeks ago is that of Pradeep Mahabeer (59). Mr Mahabeer, from Marburg, was reported missing on July 2. He was self-employed as a vendor at Uvongo Flea Market.
Yesterday (Wednesday) family members of Mr Mahabeer confirmed with the Herald that his DNA results came back on Tuesday this week and confirmed that the remains found were indeed his. Mr Mahabeer’s memorial service will be held tomorrow (Friday) at his brother’s house.
Police arrested two men Jean-Pierre Haggard (24) and Riaan Marais (27) from Sea Park for the alleged murder, kidnapping, theft and robbery. Mr Mahabeer’s car was found in Gauteng and police in Thembisa arrested Haggard in Kempton Park and recovered the car. Marais led police to a site close to the Umkomaas River where skeleton remains were found. Both men have made court appearances and the case was postponed to September 30. They remain behind bars.
