COMPETITION was tough as expected, as primary schools took part in the Strini Moodley Junior Soccer Tournament held at Port Shepstone Senior Primary last Saturday.
Twelve schools took part in this year’s tournament including Izotsha Primary and Umzintovale, playing for the first time this year. The tournament also celebrated Marburg Primary’s 25th anniversary.
In group A, last year’s finalists Port Shepstone Primary and Port Shepstone Senior Primary qualified for the semi-finals. In Group B, Merlewood Primary and Jai Hind Primary secured their semi-final places.
The first semi-final was between Port Shepstone Primary and Jai Hind, with the former winning 2-1. In a tense second semi-final Merlewood narrowly edged out Port Shepstone Senior Primary by 2 to 1.
Port Shepstone Primary had reached its second consecutive final but fell short again. Merlewood Primary, who were definitely the surprise package of the tournament, won the final by one goal to nil with the excellent goal scored by man-of-the-match, Kagiso Khowa.
It was another successful tournament and was enjoyed by all.
The family of Strini Moodley expressed gratitude to all sponsors, contributors, family and friends who played a role in making the 2015 tournament a success and also thanked Marburg Primary for its support.
