Man hacked to death with pangas

Three men were arrested on suspicion of murdering a 21-year-old man near Hibberdene.

A SOMBRE mood engulfed a small farming community near Hibberdene after a man was hacked to death with pangas at about 2am last Sunday.

The manhunt for the killers came to an end within hours of the murder.

It seems that the 21-year-old victim, from Stickfarm near Woodgrange, was about to enter his house with his girlfriend when three men appeared and started assaulting him with pangas.

“He sustained serious wounds all over his head and body and later died,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Later the same day three men were arrested by the station commander, Captain Bonginkosi Gumede and Constable Thelebona Khomo.

Two of the men appeared in the Hibberdene Court on Tuesday this week and the case was postponed to Monday, September 21. The men remain in police custody.

The other suspect appeared yesterday (Wednesday). All three men are in their twenties and were charged with murder.

According to police reports, the man’s girlfriend fled the scene without being harmed. Police are investigating.
