Seven Blue Flag beaches for the South Coast

Margate beach has once again not been able to get its Blue Flag status back.

HIBBERDENE beach is now officially one of the seven South Coast Blue Flag beaches.

The other six beaches are Marina, Trafalgar, Lucien, Southport, Umzumbe and Ramsgate. Hibberdene beach replaced Mpenjati beach which was knocked off the prestigious list this year.

This was officially announced when Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) awarded the beaches Blue Flag status during a ceremony hosted by Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom in Hermanus on Tuesday this week.

Unfortunately Margate beach has once again not been able to get its Blue Flag status back.

Blue Flag is the voluntary eco-label for beaches, marinas and boats that is recognised as a trusted symbol of quality and regarded by the World Tourism Organisation as the most well-known eco-label globally.

South Africa has been awarded 84 Blue Flag status sites for 2015, made up of beaches, marinas, boats as well as pilot status sites.
