Children scavenge for ‘toys’

The refuse poses a threat to human and animal life, say residents.

CHILDREN scavenging for ‘toys’ in uncollected rubbish in Umzumbe is causing great concern in the community.

Sizwe Mguni highlighted the problem of poor waste management at an indaba held at Margate Hotel on Thursday last week.

“Poor waste management poses a health threat to human and animal life,” said Mr Mguni. “Proper waste management is imperative and we want to know what plans the municipality has to solve this problem.”

Mphilisi Hlongwa, human settlements manager, said the waste management unit was small and they were having challenges maintaining everything at once.

However, he acknowledged that proper waste management was important and he took note of the concerns.
