Tweni homeless still have shelter – for now

The news comes as a relief for many living at the centre.

THOSE living at Nehemia Upliftment Centre won’t be sent packing – for now.

Last week the Herald published an in-depth article about 59 people possibly facing eviction at the centre. The biggest question raised was: ‘Where would these homeless people go?’

Simon April, spokesman for the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, said that the municipality had obtained a high court order which could lead to the eviction, but as ‘part of a caring government’, the municipality would not rush to enforce it.

They promised to ensure that the people living at the premises in Umtentweni would not be badly affected.

He stressed, however, that this did not mean the municipality had done an about-turn from the reasons that led them to approach the high court in the first place.
