Masinenge residents are furious
Their complaints include housing delays and non-payment of salaries.
PROTESTERS blocked the road near the SPCA in Margate earlier today, disrupting traffic entering the Masinenge informal settlements and surrounding areas.
Masinenge community members are demanding answers from Hibiscus Coast Municipality about various issues concerning the new RDP homes built in the area.
Members of the community who are employed by the contractor claim to have not received their salaries for the past three months. “We work tirelessly on a daily basis, but we have not been paid by the contractor who is seemingly no where to be found,” said a protester.
Another issue which was a concern was the drawn-out process of the RDP houses handover, lack of building material for phases two and three of the houses and the unavailability of the contractor.
Protesters were chanting songs, calling for the mayor to address them, and calling the councillor, Hibiscus Coast Municipality, and human settlements officials liars.
HCM spokesman, Simon April addressed the angry crowd, saying that their concerns are being dealt with by higher management and will be discussed with them at a meeting that will be held at Masinenge on Sunday this week, where the mayor will be present.
