Festive cons are on the prowl
The public is urged to be extremely careful at all times, but especially at this time of the year.
BE extra vigilant when drawing money from ATMs this festive season, police have warned
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said criminals often lurked around ATMs to snatch bags or money from people cashing in on their year-end bonus or their stokvel funds.
Some of the scams reported include crooks promising to “double your money” by requesting the ‘mark’ to put their cash in an envelope.
The conman then disappears.
Others say that they can ‘cleanse’ a person… for a small ‘donation’, of course.
Pickpockets and bag snatchers really come out to play… and guard against walking while talking on your cellphone.
Don’t leave handbags in trolleys while shopping, rather tuck handbags tightly under your arm. Do not carry important documents in your handbag if you can avoid it. Carry as little cash as possible.
Stokvel money should be deposited into a bank account instead of being kept at home. Do not make it public knowledge when and where withdrawals will be made or divided.
