Three near drownings averted at eNyokeni between Umgababa and Umkomaas
The swift response is commended.
Three locals faced a near drowning at eNyokeni on Saturday afternoon, October 31.
At 16:15, The KZN surf rescue network was alerted to reports of a drowning in progress between Umgababa and Umkomaas.
An NSRI Rocky Bay rescue swimmer, who is also an NSRI lifeguard and an Amanzimtoti Surf Lifesaving Club lifeguard, Sphesihle Mngadi, were nearby at the time and responded.
Local eThekwini pro lifeguards, off duty at the time and also near the scene, responded.
On arrival, NSRI Rocky Bay rescue swimmer Sphesihle found three men appearing to be in distress caught in rip currents in the mid break surf zone.
He launched into the surf zone armed with a rescue torpedo buoy and was able to reach the three in the mid breakers, guiding one, who was able to float on his back, to the beach.
He swam to the remaining two men, using the aid of the rescue torpedo buoy.
Chest compressions were applied to one of the men by Sphesihle, and he regained consciousness and spontaneous breathing.
eThekwini pro lifeguards then joined Sphesihle on the scene. One man was transported to hospital by family members and the remaining two required no medical assistance.
