ON Friday, December 4, Janet Beckerley spotted an unknown man who had gained entry into the Strelitzia Mews security complex where she lives.
She asked what he was doing there and he handed her a pamphlet, identifying himself as ‘Christo’, also giving the name of his employer.
He explained that he bought gold and asked Janet whether she would like to sell any. Feeling uncomfortable, she politely rejected his offer.
He persisted and asked her whether she would at least like to know how much she would get for one of the four pieces of her 21 carat gold bracelet.
“Curiosity got the better of me and, like a fool, I handed him the piece,” said Janet. “He then proceeded to crush it up in front of me. I did not see my gold bracelet any more, only a lump of gold.”
Hopping mad, Janet began to shout at Christo, demanding to know why he would do such a thing.
“He then offered me between R3 000 and R4?000 and bent the lump of gold back into its circular form, leaving it damaged,” she said. He then left the property.
Janet is now forced to pay for the re-shaping of the gold bracelet which was a gift from her husband, David.
Simson’s Gold said: “Christo will be given a warning and be dismissed if this ever happens again,” said the owner, Mr Bharath. “I would love to help Janet by paying for the repairs or repairing it for her,” he added.
