Bursaries presented to hard workers
Twenty-one tertiary students received a total of R230 000 from the Ugu District Municipality Mayoral Fund.

Andisiwe Kotyana, from Gamalakhe, was speaking on behalf of 21 tertiary students who received a total of R230 000 from the Ugu District Municipality Mayoral Fund at an event at St Martin de Porres on Tuesday.
The bursaries were presented by Ugu mayor Councillor Ntombifikile Gumede and Umdoni mayor, Councillor Siyabonga Khwela.
Cllr Gumede emphasised the importance of local government playing a pivotal role towards building a strong local graduate professional base by providing much-needed assistance to deserving students who are studying towards a professional career.
“The municipality is planting a seed towards ensuring an improved level of the graduates in the district,” she said.
The mayor says she planned for this fund to increase annually.
“Education is a fundamental right and it is truly rewarding for us to be able to assist these students.”
Creston College’s Mbuso Dlamini, who obtained six distinctions, was ecstatic to receive the bursary. The 17-year-old from Gamalakhe has been accepted to study for a BSc in chemical engineering at McGill University in Canada as well as at the University of Cape Town.
Cllr Khwela urged all those who received bursaries to focus less on student politics and other activities that may interfere with their studies and to focus more on obtaining good results.
