Escapees re-arrested in taxi

Two men arrested on suspicion of raping a woman escaped from the Southport police station, still wearing their handcuffs.

WITHIN hours of a 26-year-old woman reporting that she had been raped, two suspects were briefly taken into custody before managing to escape.

The woman was raped in Stephen Road, Anerley this morning at about 5am.

“Two men approached the woman and threatened her with a knife. One of the men dragged her to the side of the road where he raped her while the other walked away,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Shortly after the woman reported the attack at the police station, officers from the Crime Intelligence Unit arrested two men.

They were taken to the Southport police station where it appears they managed to escape, still handcuffed, from the Community Service Centre while the woman was being interviewed.

Back up was called and K9 unit officers from Port Shepstone rushed to the police station to assist. Constable Senzo Nzama from the K9 unit acted on information received and stopped a minibus taxi in the Upper Melville area. The suspects were found inside the taxi and were re-arrested.

Both men will face charges of rape.

Cluster commander of Ugu, Major General Thembi Ndlovu conveyed her appreciation to those who came forward with information and also praised the quick response of the police officers.

“It is the duty of everyone in the community to expose ruthless criminals who target the vulnerable. Let us all take a stand against any violent acts against women and children in our society,” she said.
