Update: Woman (92) still fights deportation

Frail, elderly Myrtle Cothill faces deportation now that her visa has expired.

A DECISION is yet to be made about a frail, elderly former Port Shepstone woman who faces deportation after her two-year visa expired this week.

Myrtle Cothill (92), who suffers from a heart condition, visited her only child, her daughter, Mary Wills, in the United Kingdom in February 2014. However, she has no one to look after her in South Africa and dearly wishes to spend her last remaining years with Mrs Wills.

Sadly, the United Kingdom Home Office turned down her application to remain in the UK. Now the home office is awaiting the results of a psychiatric assessment, expected next week, that forms part of the appeal against her deportation.

More than 100 000 people have signed an online petition to keep Mrs Cothill in the UK. Also, in a last-ditch attempt to obtain permission for Mrs Cothill to stay in the United Kingdom, the family is trying to raise £18 000 to bring the matter before the European Court of Human Rights. Family members have started an appeal on the website ‘Go Fund Me’.
