WILTON Mtshali, a development officer for the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Referees’ Society, has resigned.
The Herald was contacted by some disappointed rugby fans who are now concerned about their future in rugby. Mr Mtshali has been with Southern KwaZulu-Natal Sub-Union as a development officer since July 2007.
“His main concern was to grow rugby in the region and more importantly grow rugby in disadvantages areas,” said Brian Xolo, from Nyandezulu. Many other coaches from Gamalakhe, KwaNzimakwe, Izingolweni, Margate and Gcilima said there has been tremendous change in the sub-union since Mr Mtshali arrived in 2007.
“In all the disadvantaged areas the young and old athletes have a better understanding and knowledge of rugby. Mr Mtshali use to play a huge role in the coaching the young and older athletes,” said Mr Xolo.
During the nine years Mr Mtshali has organised many rugby tournaments. “He has been a father, brother and mentor to many in our youth,” said another coach.
Some of the athletes are overseas through Mr Mtshali’s assistance. He was also influential in bringing the MEC for Sport and Recreation, Sibhidla Saphetha, to a disadvantaged school in Nyandezulu near Paddock. “Are we prepared to lose him after how much he has done for the community,” asked Mr Xolo.
The Herald contacted Mr Mtshali and he confirmed that he had resigned, but could not provide further information regarding his resignation.
