Ugu workers burn tyres

Tyres were burnt and entrances blocked as protests erupted.

MORE than 50 Ugu water services workers went on strike today (Tuesday), burning tyres and blocking the entrance to the Marburg municipal offices.

The workers, belonging to the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), were angry about poor working conditions, lack of new uniforms and municipal services allegedly being offered to private companies against municipal policies.

“For the past two years, we have been promised new uniforms. We are told there is not enough money, yet we see new contractors being hired and paid all the time,” said one angry worker.

“We are also working under unsafe conditions as water treatment and sewerage plants have become dumping sites.”

SAPS members were on standby.
