Academy stars shine at matric dance

Matric pupils rose to the occasion and dressed up as famous jazz stars of yesteryear.

SOUTH Coast Academy’s matric dance theme was ‘Jazz Festival’, based on famous jazz artists. The event was emceed by the acclaimed Charles Lamb (aka Benny Goodman), who introduced the first performance of the night, the well-known, popular Louis Armstrong (Eton Hess) who, as always, dominated the stage and impressed the audience. Choreographer Caren van Zyl (Peggy Lee) exceeded expectations.

The very elegant Arianne Gordon, assuming the role of Billie Holiday and accompanied by the glamorous Lungelo Mhlongo as King Oliver, delivered the opening speech superbly and paid tribute to their fellow performers.

Menzi Mqadi (Duke Ellington) did a sterling job saying grace and giving thanks for the lovely evening and the past year. Entertainment included Lena Horne (Jessica Swart), Cab Calloway (Trevert Sayers) and international star Wynton Marsalis (Timothy Rinkwest). Kanya Bana (LaVern Baker) ended the extravaganza with a lovely repertoire of songs and dance.
