‘Meet your councillors’ – a series of introductions

It's important to keep in touch with your local councillor.

THIS is the first of a series of articles introducing councillors to communities.

Individual telephone numbers will be included under their photographs, not to put the councillors on the spot, but so that you can contact them if you need their help.Why is it so important for you to know your councillor?

Communication with your community leaders can allow the right services to be delivered to the right people.

According to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, councillors guide the development of local policies.

Councillors’ responsibilities include:

* Representing their communities at council level;

* Setting service standards and priorities, thus monitoring the performance of the municipality;

* Strategic planning for the entire municipality and assisting in the allocation of financial budgets to communities through council budget;

* Communicating with other levels of government, the private sector and NGOs for the benefit of their communities;

* Making sure that community assets are managed in a proper manner;

* Maintaining good relations between the municipality and communities.
