ISLAMIC School’s annual fund-raising dinner’s theme was ‘Reading, a lost tradition’. Guest speaker, author and gr 9 pupil of Isipingo Secondary Zahraa Moosa, who had her first book entitled ‘Gateway to Obsidian’ published at the age of 12, shared her passion for reading and writing. She encouraged parents to rekindle the love of reading and the fine art of writing. Autographed copies of the book were bought by keen readers. In keeping with the theme, gr 8 pupil Wardah Madari shared her experience of writing on ‘wattpad’ (an internet site for free stories and books written by published and aspiring authors) where she is currently writing a book. Gr 10 pupil Mariam Nakhooda urged pupils to read more and Zaeem Ebrahim and Umar Farouk Desai presented their speeches from the AMS contest. Potted shrubs and fresh blooms adorned tables and these were sold to raise funds. Guests enjoyed a seven course meal.
