PORT Shepstone Islamic School was honoured to host ‘Salaamedia’, South Africa’s first official satellite and online portal for humanitarian journalism last week. Azhar Vadi addressed pupils about the positive spin-offs using technology and social media platforms to create awareness and secure sponsorships to alleviate the plight of the less fortunate. They shared success stories of projects undertaken and encouraged pupils to understand the various aspects of media reporting. This was relevant and enriching for gr 10 pupils who had recently completed a Life Orientation volunteer project in the Umkholombe informal settlement where they distributed meat, food, shoes and mattresses and are actively assisting in rebuilding a makeshift home that was gutted in a recent fire.
Grades 1 to 6 term reports will be issued and parent/teacher consultations will be held tomorrow, September 30.
