Confusion ‘Reyns’ over municipality’s name

Welcome to ‘Ray’ (or is it ‘Rey’?) Nkonyeni Municipality.

MOST citizens know by now that Hibiscus Coast Municipality has been renamed Ray Nkonyeni, after a local struggle hero from the ’80s and ’90s.

The only problem: His name wasn’t ‘Ray’!

His ID document shows that the man immortalised (possibly only until the next political dispensation comes along) was actually ‘Rey’… and NOT ‘Ray’.

Luckily, the family (including his widow, former MEC Peggy Nkonyeni) does not seem too upset by the faux pas as a correction could lead to huge costs in just printing alone.

Municipal spokesman Simon April said they were aware of the mistake, which came about through public submissions when they called for suggestions for a new name for the amalgamated Hibiscus Coast/Izingolweni municipalities.

Someone suggested ‘Ray’ Nkonyeni… and nobody bothered to check.

Hence, the decision has now been made to keep him as ‘Ray’.

“It remains in honour of the same person,” said Mr April.
