World Aids Day celebrated at Genesis
Genesis Care Centre held a World Aids Day get-together last Thursday.
A WORLD Aids Day remembrance service was held at Genesis Care Centre recently.
Staff and guests gathered at the chapel to remember those who have died due to HIV/Aids.
Guest speaker, Dr Terry Gilpin, gave an informative talk on the history of the pandemic.

He highlighted on the Red Ribbon project which launched internationally in 1995 and the first real anti-retroviral drugs that became available the same year.
“South Africa has the biggest HIV epidemic in the world. There are about seven million people living with HIV and there were 180 000 deaths from Aids in 2015,” said Dr Gilpin.

He encouraged those who are HIV positive to look after themselves and to be careful to avoid spreading the disease. By the same token, those who were HIV negative were urged to avoid a lifestyle which would put them at risk of contracting the disease.
“HIV testing is freely available and there is access to anti-retroviral drugs for all,” said Dr Gilpin.
