Six arrested for killing cop

The men are due to appear in the Hibberdene Magistrate's Court today.

HAWKS officers in Port Shepstone, assisted by Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Public Order Policing (POP)  arrested six suspects aged between 18 and 22  who are thought to be implicated in the armed robbery near Mtwalume in which off duty policeman, Constable Siyabonga Mbele (28) was shot dead.

The men will be charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

“During the arrest, two service pistols that were taken during the robbery were recovered, as was an unlicensed 9mm pistol suspected to have been used in the commission of crime,” said spokesman, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing.

The men are due to appear in the Hibberdene Magistrate’s Court today (Monday).
