Shutters click in uMkhuze
Visitors have taken some lovely photographs in this heavenly reserve recently.
IF you need to escape the madding holiday crowds for a day or three, take iSimangaliso Wetland Park marketing manager Lindy Duffield’s advice and head inland to the lush pans, blue mountains, wide open savannah and big five viewings of iSimangaliso’s uMkhuze section.
“Even as a day trip, uMkhuze is ideal as an alternative route from the N2 highway to the coastline, if you travel via the eMshophi Gate in the west to Ophansi Gate in the East. The route then takes you past the renowned birding destination of Muzi Pans and on to the park’s Sodwana Bay, only an hour’s drive away,” she said.

Summer in uMkhuze has its own beauty, with the dawn of a sizzling day heralded by cicadas and heady nights occasionally punctuated by thunderstorms. Baby animals of every species are providing incredible entertainment for visitors at the moment and during the middle of the day, the central swimming pool offers welcome relief from the heat.
“The regular social media postings speak for themselves of the amazing experiences our visitors are having,” said Lindy. Recently there have been lovely postings of photos of lion, cheetah, wild dogs, elephants and, recently, a Pel’s fishing owl. The new aerial boardwalk, which forms part of uMkhuze’s famous guided Fig Forest Walk, also features in many photographs.
Good news is that some camping, tented and chalet accommodation is still available. For last minute bookings contact the uMkhuze Hospitality Desk at 035 5739001/4, or advance reservations at 033 845 1000.
