Water thief traced and charged

The man was siphoning off water to a house and farm, at no cost to himself.

CHARGES have been laid against a man who allegedly installed a sophisticated water pump system to one of Ugu’s main pipelines to the Seaslopes reservoir and using this to feed water to a house and a farm for free.

Making this allegation even more serious is that large parts of the South Coast have suffered with no water for lengthy periods, apparently mainly due to striking workers sabotaging the Ugu District Municipality’s water system just before Christmas.

Two holes were drilled into the main pipeline and pipes attached to a pump, powered by a generator. When the water was not being pumped by the illegal system, water just flowed back into the river, wasted.

Ugu officials traced the pipe to a nearby house and farm and have now lodged charges with the SAPS.

The man cannot be identified until he appears in court.
